CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

  • – Not cleaning your rice cooker frequently can cause bad odors. Please clean it frequently. (Make sure the rice cooker is unplugged and wait until the unit cools down.)
  • – Wipe the main body and the lid with a dry dishcloth. Do not use benzene or thinners.
  • – Liquid left in the inner lid or in the inner pot may form a starch film but it is harmless.
How to clean each part
PartHow to clean
Inner PotWipe any materials and moisture from the outer and bottom of the inner pot. A rough sponge, brush or abrasive may result in peeling of the coating — use dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth or sponge.
Inner LidIf moisture remains on the inner lid, wipe it with a dry dishcloth. Since the edge of the lid is metal, clean it with care.
Pot Water GrooveMoisture generated while cooking is designed to collect in the dew dish. After cooking, clean it with a dry dishcloth.
Inside the Main BodyIf any material sticks to the temperature detector, remove it without damaging the metal plate. Wipe materials or moisture from the thermal plate.

The steam cap

  • – Remove the steam cap by pulling it off from the lid after every use. Before cleaning, remove the steam cap.
  • – Separate the steam cap into 2 parts and soak them in lukewarm water. Wash with a sponge or a soft cloth.
  • – After cooking, wipe the water with a wet cloth to avoid odor build up.
  • – Never use hazardous chemicals (e.g. benzene, varnish, etc.).

About lithium battery

This product contains a lithium battery for blackout compensation and the clock. It lasts about 3 years depending on use. If the current time is no longer displayed, the battery may be depleted.

What is blackout compensation

This product recognizes the condition of the unit; after a blackout it operates immediately. If a blackout occurs during cooking, the cooking time is delayed by the blackout time. If the rice became cold because of the blackout, warming is cancelled.

BEFORE USING YOUR MACHINE

  1. Clean the inner pot and remove any moisture.

    • Clean with a dishcloth. A rough sponge may cause the non-stick coating to peel — use a non-abrasive material.
  2. Measure the rice correctly with the measuring cup.

    • Rice filled to the top of the cup is one serving. (e.g. 3 persons = 3 cups, 6 persons = 6 cups)
  3. Clean the rice thoroughly in a separate container and rinse until the rice water is clear.

  4. Adjust the water amount according to the menu selected.

    • Place the inner pot on a flat surface and adjust water to the water level line marked inside the pot.
    • White: use the 'White' line (max. 6 persons). Multigrain/Brown & GABA: use the 'Multigrain/Brown, GABA' line (max. 4 persons). Porridge: use the 'Porridge' line (max. 1.5 persons).

FOR TASTY RICE

  • – Always measure rice correctly with the measuring cup. Adjust water to the water level line after placing the inner pot on a flat surface. If the water amount is incorrect, the rice may be undercooked or overcooked.
  • – Store rice correctly. Avoid direct sunlight or hot/humid places to prevent the rice moisture from drying. For dried rice unpacked for a long time, cook with more water (about a half water level line).
  • – It is better to set the preset time short. When using the timer, try not to use old, dry rice; if that is all available, add more water. Using 'Preset' over 10 hours can make rice dry and crispy, and a longer preset time may increase the melanoizing effect.
  • – Keep rice warm for less than 12 hours; a long time may cause discoloration or odor.
  • – Always clean the cooker frequently; in particular wipe alien materials from the lid to prevent bad odors.

HOW TO COOK

  1. Press the MENU button continuously to select your desired menu option.

    • Each press cycles: White → GABA → Multigrain/Brown → Porridge → Multi Cook → Slow Cook. (For the CR-0631F model, the Cook/Turbo button is applied.)
  2. Press the COOK/QUICK button to start cooking.

  3. Steaming and remaining time.

    • When a number appears on the display, that is the remaining time left in the cooking cycle. If cooking rice, it is in the steaming process.
  4. Completion.

    • When cooking completes, a beep sounds and the Keep Warm function starts. Quickly stir the rice. Do not press “CANCEL” when cooking finishes or the Keep Warm function will be canceled.

Maillard reaction

Your rice can become light yellow at the bottom of the inner pot sometimes. This is due to the Maillard reaction and is completely safe to consume. Some settings may cause this to occur more often than others.

HOW TO USE “MY MODE”

What is MY MODE?

With My Mode, you can customize the texture and flavor of your rice to make the perfect rice for you and your family.

  • – SOAKING: controls the rice's texture. The longer the soak time, the softer and stickier the rice. There are 4 levels of soaking.
  • – HEATING: determines the rice's flavor. The longer the heating time, the more developed the flavor. There are 4 levels of heating. (The Maillard reaction may occur during this process.)
  • – Both HEATING and SOAKING can be selected individually or in tandem.

How to use MY MODE

  1. When the rice cooker is in standby mode, press the “Min./MY MODE” button to enter MY MODE.

  2. Adjust the soaking time: first select the menu option (WHITE, GABA, MULTIGRAIN/BROWN). Press the Hrs button repeatedly until the desired soaking time appears. Default soaking times are 0, 2, 4, 6 (6 is longest). Soaking times are levels, not minutes.

  3. Adjust the heating time: press the Min./MY MODE button repeatedly until the desired heating time appears. Default heating times are 0, 6, 8, 10 (10 is longest). Heating times are levels, not minutes.

  4. After selecting your heating and soaking times, press COOK/QUICK to save, then press COOK/QUICK again to start cooking.

Insight

  • – MY MODE may change the quality of the rice and may cause scorching. (Default settings for both SOAK and HEAT are 0.)
  • – Using MY MODE may cause longer cooking times depending on the settings selected.
  • – By increasing the HEAT, scorching may occur at the bottom of the inner pot.
  • – There are 16 different flavor and texture combinations with MY MODE: firm & sticky, soft & mild, soft & sticky, etc.

CUSTOMIZED TEMPERATURE CONTROL

  • – You can adjust the cooking temperature level according to your preference.
  • – High temperature levels: for cereals, old rice and soft-boiled rice.
  • – Low temperature levels: for newly harvested rice.
  1. Entering temperature control: while in standby mode, press the Min./MY MODE button and then the TIMER button.

  2. Adjusting the temperature level: press the Hrs button to increase (max. level 2); press the Min./MY MODE button to decrease (min. level -2).

  3. Saving: after selecting the desired level, press the Cook/Quick button to save.

Reset Function (Customization/Function)

  • – The reset function resets all setting values (customized rice taste, customized cooking, customized warming, keep warm during sleep).
  • – Press the Cancel button for 5 seconds in standby mode.
  • – The current time is initialized to 12:00. To set the current time, refer to the Set Time section.

HOW TO USE “GABA”

What is GABA rice?

GABA is a nickname for gamma-aminobutyric acid found in brown rice, said to promote metabolism in brain cells, liver and kidneys, suppress neutral fats, and lower blood pressure. Germinated brown rice still has the germ attached and more of this amino acid. Cuckoo's GABA menu boosts the amino acid by cooking at a lower temperature for a longer time — making it more digestible and healthier.

Tips to buy quality brown rice

  • – Check the dates of harvest and pounding: within 1 year of harvest, 3 months from pounding.
  • – Check if the embryo is alive. The rice surface should be light yellow and glazing. Whitish stirred-up surface or darkish brown rice is not suitable for germination.

Features of germinated brown rice

  • – Compared with white rice (6 hours), germinated brown rice has about: Gamma-aminobutyric acid 5x, Inositol 10x, Food fiber 4.3x, Phytic acid 10.3x, Ferulic acid 1.4x, Gamma-oryzanol 23.9x.

Using the GABA menu

  1. To promote germination, soak brown rice for 16 hours in water.

    • Put washed brown rice in an appropriate container, pour sufficient water to soak. Pre-germination should not exceed 16 hours. Wash the rice clean with flowing water before using the GABA menu; do not over-wash or the embryos may be destroyed. When pre-germination is complete, wash the rice, put it in the inner pot, add appropriate water, and use the GABA menu.
  2. Press “Menu” to select “GABA”. (Default: 2 Hours. When selected, 2H is indicated.)

  3. Press “Hrs” and “Min/My Mode” to set the germination time. Hrs increases by 2 hours; Min/My Mode decreases by 2 hours. GABA time can be 0, 2, 4, 6 hours. If set to 0, pressing Cook/Quick starts cooking immediately.

  4. Press “Cook/Quick”. Germination begins immediately; the Cook indicator lights with the germination time.

TO KEEP RICE WARM AND TASTY

For a Meal

To warm the rice, press the Keep “Warm/Reheat” button to start reheating. After 9 minutes the rice should taste fresh.

  1. On Keeping Warm

    • A mark on the display indicates the rice is kept warm for 3 hours. Press the Hr. button to show the elapsed time; press “Min/My Mode” to show the current time.
  2. On Reheating

    • The mark turns round and round while reheating.
  3. Completion of Reheating

    • After reheating, the Keep Warm function restarts and the elapsed warm time is displayed.
  • – Once the display status is set, it is memorized until changed.
  • – Frequent use of the Reheat function may discolor or dry the rice. Use it once or twice per day.
  • – If a separate appliance or gas burner is used to cook rice, put the rice into the cooker and press “Warm/Reheat” to keep warm.

How to Adjust the Warm Temperature

Odor may develop, water drops may form, or rice may discolor with frequent use. The warm temperature may be incorrect — adjust it.

  • – Press the “Keep Warm” button in Keep Warm or Standby mode for over 5 seconds. The display changes and a buzzer sounds; the figure shows the current warm temperature.
  • – Press the “Hrs” / “Min” buttons to change the display in turn.
  • – After setting the desired temperature, press “Cook/Keep Warm” and “Timer” to enter the value. If you press Cancel or 7 seconds pass, it returns to Standby.
  • – A stale smell and water drops: temperature too low — raise by 1~2℃.
  • – Rice turns yellow, dry and develops odor: temperature too high — lower by 1~2℃.
Customized Warm function: used when water runs when you open the inner lid while keeping warm, or the rice is swelled. Press “Keep Warm/Reheat” in My mode, press “Hrs” to change the display, set the value and press “Cook/Quick”. If water runs out when opening the lid, raise the setting 1~2 stages; if rice is swollen around the edge, lower it 1~2 stages.
Keep Warm during Sleep mode: to prevent deterioration from long keep-warm, set a low warm temperature during sleeping time (10:00pm~04:00am). To set: press “Keep Warm” twice in My mode, press “Hrs” then “Cook” when the letters are fixed. To cancel: press “Keep Warm” twice, press “Min” then “Cook” when the letters blink. Do not activate if you want to keep warm; in summer rice may discolor or develop odor.

Odor Develops While Keeping Warm

  • – Clean the cooker frequently; neglecting the lid may develop an odor from bacteria.
  • – Even if clean, bacteria can be present. If strong odors develop, boil water to sterilize: fill to the plain rice water level line for 2 persons, add a big spoonful of ginger, close the lid and press Cook/Quick to boil. Press Cancel 30~40 minutes after boiling, then always clean the inner pot.
  • – If you keep rice warm without cleaning the inner pot after steaming food, an odor may penetrate the rice.

Cautions for Keeping Warm

  1. Evenly stir the cooked rice after cooking to improve taste. (For a small quantity, pile the rice in the center of the inner pot.)
  2. Keep warm for less than 12 hours; a long time may discolor or develop odor. After 24 hours the elapsed time blinks. For multigrain/brown rice, we recommend not warming.
  3. Do not keep the rice scoop in the inner pot while keeping warm.
  4. The rice on the edge of the inner pot or the bottom of the steam outlet may turn plain and swollen — stir and mix it.
  5. Do not mix a small quantity of rice or leftovers with the rice being kept warm — it may develop an odor. (Use a microwave for cold rice.)
